I seem to have to do a lot of messing around to get series with the year in brackets to work and there's a lot of trial and error.

e.g.
Castle (2009)
Human Target (2010)
etc etc

Any chance of a quick guide to get the best way to config to get input like
Castle.2009.S01E01.720p.HDTV.x264-CTU
to output like
Castle (2009) [01x01] - Title

There isn't any way to get year for TV shows. Just for Movies.

To output: Castle [01x01] - Title
Set Separator 1 to " ["
Set Separator 2 to "] - "
Add '0' for Season turned ON.

There's the preview on top where you can see what it will become.

And sorry, I won't be adding Year to TV shows.

Maybe I wasn't clear - the tvdb show titles have years in them because of duplicate shows, that's why the scene names have years in them too:

http://thetvdb.com/?tab=series&id=82607&lid=7
http://thetvdb.com/?tab=series&id=83462&lid=7
"Castle" is NOT the same as "Castle (2009)"

For my HTPC to grab the correct metadata and art, the show name needs to match the TVDB showname so I need to identify and name accordingly.

Looks like you want to use 'Force Showname'.

By default,
Input: Castle.2009.S01E01.720p.HDTV.x264-CTU.avi
Output will be Castle.1x01.Flowers for Your Grave.avi

Click on the Force Showname.
Enter this:
From: Castle
To: Castle (2009)

Now all shows that are found as 'Castle' will be renamed as 'Castle (2009)'
http://www.thetvdb.com/?tab=seasonall&id=83462&lid=7

BTW, I am removing any bracket stuff in the showname by default in theTVDB.
<title>Castle (2009): Complete Episode List</title>

I think maybe I should not do that. Let whatever show name theTVDB uses be by default.
Probably better. Will change this for next build.

Thanks for the input.

My vote would be for taking the title as whatever the tvdb outputs as you suggested. If folks are using other apps or scrapers that take metadata from tvdb, it makes it much safer.

The secondary problem is that sometimes the wrong show is identified as well. The shows of this type seem to need a database entry AND a force showname to get the correct episode names. I tested tonight with "Players" and "Parenthood" dummy files (new shows this week with duplicates) and without a force, the pick up the wrong ep name.

Does the renamer submit the year as part of the search? I think that would help identify the correct show.

It doesn't submit years for TV shows. Just movies.

I see if I can do something about it.

New shows are usually less accurate in finding for Google. Google does assume the more popular web pages be listed higher.

Thanks for looking at it, these names are becoming more prevalent and first time hits are what keep me with the tool.
