TheRenamer was suggested for me as a way to rename all of my movies to make them easier for IMDB lookup. I am currently not in possession of any TV shows.

All of my Movies live on a network share that is mapped onto drive M:\ Each show has its own folder and the folder name and movie file name match. I have used Yanfoe to manage this so each folder also has a variety of files such as nfo, fanart.jpg, etc.

So a sample folder would look like this;

Matrix\
\Matrix.mkv
\Matrix.nfo
\Matrix.jpg
\Matrix.fanart.jpg
\Matrix-fanart.jpg

And so forth.

The problem is that TheRenamer seems to want to ignore some of these files or give them invalid names; I put therenamer into movie mode and set it up so that it will do a dot between the movie name and the year of the movie and put this information in the movie title as well as the folder title.

When I do this it starts doing things like this;

\Matrix.fanart.jpg -->\The Matrix.1999\The Matrix.1999.jpg

Can anyone help me sort this out? For Yanfoe to continue working I need all of the files in the folder to also be renamed but it seems that therenamer is struggling here. Any advice would be very helpful, thanks.

I'm testing based on your Matrix files. Movie Mode.
I don't get any invalid warnings.

Can u post the log after dragging Matrix?
Turn ON confirmation, and drag Matrx folder in.
Then hit cancel. This ends the session and you should see 'Show Log' button.

All files renamed are named the same. It's only the extension that is different.
So it correct to rename to The Matrix.1999.jpg

theRenamer is designed to rename 'new' files that aren't named properly yet.
You can download and test some examples from this:
http://www.therenamer.com/downloads/sample_files.zip
These are normal blank .txt with names commonly found.

Hi Alfred.

Thanks for responding.

The problem, as I showed in the example you quoted is that TheRenamer is trying to actually modify the filename. For example, it is not okay to take matrix-fanart.jpg and turn it into matrix.1999.jpg... where did "fanart" go? I need that for a media player to recognize that it is fan art.

Here's a log from another file run. I did modify the setup so that the year will now go in as .(year)

Yes, that's the main purpose of theRenamer. To modify the filename. :)

All files processed will be renamed to the same filename, only file format is kept.

For now, the word 'fanart' isn't handled specially.

In your case, maybe set "jpg" to be ignored. So theRenamer will skip all .jpg

Well I do want it to rename the files of course, but the file prefix or suffix needs to be kept intact. I don't want it to skip the jpg files, just rename them so that the new filename includes anu suffix, etc, and does not strip that part off.

I'll add this into the To-Do list.
Besides the word 'fanart', anything else special to take note?

I'm thinking of this:
For jpg formats, if there's a word 'fanart', put it to the end of the filename: Matrix.1991.fanart.jpg
If there's more than 1 jpgs in the same folder, it will look like this:
Matrix.1991.fanart.jpg
Matrix.1991.fanart (2).jpg

No settings to tweak.

fanart is from what I have seen the only one that is causing the problem since it shows up in two flavors in addition to the file name;

So, for any given movie there will be a moviename.jpg (thumbnail) a moviename-fanart.jpg (fanart) and a moviename.fanart.jpg (2nd fanart format). I create all of my media stuff with YANFOE and this appears to be how it creates media if you tell it you have both XBMC and a networked media tank reading the stuff.

Is this correct:
When theRenamer finds a jpg (only jpg), look for:

a) '-fanart'
if exist, write '-fanart' to the end of filename.

if not, look for
b) '.fanart'
if exist, write '.fanart' to the end of filename.

Yes I think that statement would cover the use case nicely. Thanks for looking at it.
