Well, I can see there's 2 different standards already:

Those should be it. The year is 4 digits, then it is either followed by or preceded by month then day.

I'd love this... Colbert & Daily Show FTW!

I don't know if this would help or not, but XBMC just got a patch to support dated shows. I have some regex info I could pass along if that is what you use for matching.

yes this is an important feature if you are going to have "the best" renamer, since there are a bunch of dated shows out there.

I'd would very much like this feature, too.

Since the shows I download most often are the ones that air every weekday (Daily Show, Letterman, Colbert), this would help me out alot! And for an automation standpoint, it seems to make sense.

This would also be useful for the people that use Windows Media Center to record live tv since all of their recordings are saved with only the show title and air date.

Interesting to know.

Can you give an example of the filename saved?

Two files I recently saw:

the.daily.show.2009.12.01.pdtv.xvid-fqm.avi

t
This is showname.yyyy.mm.dd

I've also seen:
the.daily.show.12.01.2009.pdtv.xvid-fqm.avi

This is showname.mm.dd.yyyy

the.daily.show.2009.12.01.pdtv.xvid-fqm.avi

is the exact format I come across 99% of the time. Sorry for the delay :(
