TV documentaries usually have a different format then TV shows for example take a look at one of the longest running documentary in the UK (if not in the world). Its called "The Sky at Night" and this is its usual format:
"The Sky at Night - Aug 2010 - Monster Star"
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0262990/

and as you can see, even IMDB has a problem with these types of season classification; just take a look at their Episodes part for this series:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0262990/episodes

Maybe it would be better to include a possibility for custom name parsing for special shows?

The Sky at Night - Aug 2010 - Monster Star.ext

Hmm, this filename isn't using the standard airdates format (2010-08-02)
Might need to extend how airdates are recognized.

Can you post more examples of the ORIGINAL filenames you get for this show?

Also, take a look at thetvdb.com for various shows like Doctor Who (2005) and Good Eats. These also have specials and I have been told to name them "Good Eats s00e01", but this naming convention is not recognized by theRenamer. Does any one know what the proper naming convention for this would be so that it gets picked up in the search results?

I just tried "Good Eats s00e01.avi" and got back Good Eats.S00E01.Romancing the Bird (A Good Eats Thanksgiving).avi.
Nothing special required to get it, just drag and drop.
theRenamer went to this page http://www.thetvdb.com/?tab=season&seriesid=73067&seasonid=20532&lid=7

For Specials, you MUST use theTVDB mode.
Special are recognized by Season 0.
